How to help society interact with genomic technology

8th June 2020

Conference welcome address by the President of the ESHG (from the ESHG website):

Dear Human Geneticists, Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends,

I am honored to invite you to join the 53rd annual European Human Genetics. Due to the difficult present circumstances this meeting will be for the first time a fully virtual event to be held from Saturday, June 6 to Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

You will be hosting more than 120 invited speakers, 172 abstracts selected as oral presentations in concurrent session and 2700 posters in your living room!

At the ESHG meeting, we thrive year in year out to bring you what is at the forefront of human genetics both scientifically and technologically without losing sight of educating the upcoming generation of human geneticists. As these goals are close to our heart and as they are even more important during the covid pandemic, the ESHG and its Scientific Program Committee decided to go online. We have invited the best speakers for the concurrent symposia and selected the best abstracts for oral presentations to create a program that represents the breadth of our specialty. These presentations will be completed by a set of educational sessions, which are aimed to update you on various topics in genetics.

I am particularly pleased to see that a record number of young human geneticists have submitted abstracts summarizing their results this year. Their enthusiasm and passion for science should not be quenched. We want them to take the virtual stage and compete for our multiple young investigators awards.

While I think that we would all have loved to be able to say “I bin ein Berliner” in the German capital, this online meeting will surely allow us to state that “wir sind Genetiker” and that our community and its science are thriving.

In summary, the ESHG meeting will be the web address to link to if you are a human geneticist, whatever your professional background and wherever you will be during the confinement.
